ANELLO Photonics, the creator of the Silicon Photonics Optical Gyroscope (SiPhOG™) and a leader in solid-state, high-precision inertial navigation systems, has created the ANELLO GROUND INS, a breakthrough solution for precision agriculture, delivering reliable and accurate inertial navigation in GPS-denied environments. The ANELLO GROUND INS is powered by ANELLO’s unique optical gyroscope technology and can be seamlessly integrated across a wide range of autonomous farming applications.
Autonomous tractors offer many benefits to farmers who are reliant on technology to overcome labor shortages, reduce overhead, minimize over-spraying that contributes to water, fertilizer, insecticide, and other supply waste. However, these technologies are not as precise and reliable as farmers need them to be if they navigate using GPS alone. In agricultural environments, GPS signal integrity is frequently degraded by physical obstructions such as tree canopies, terrain features and dense vegetation. These interruptions can result in loss of GPS and degradation in positioning accuracy, which are causing autonomous tractors to deviate from their intended paths. The downstream financial impact of imprecise applied inputs to farmers is substantial – off-target spraying and missed application zones can drive input waste of 5–15%, while crop damage and overlap errors can reduce yields by 2–10%. These inefficiencies quickly compound, translating into thousands of dollars lost per acre each season, alongside increased rework, fuel costs, and operational downtime.
