The inability of the House to elect a new Speaker has numerous trickle-down consequences, NPC CEO Kam Quarles told the Ag Information Network this week. “Given this environment, I don’t know how long that’s going to take, but I do know that every day they’re spending on that, they’re not solving the government shutdown issues, they’re certainly not advancing a Farm Bill. So, this is not a great place to be in given the gravity of everything that people are facing,” said Quarles.
Since the expiration of the previous Farm Bill on Sept. 30, some in Washington have floated the idea of passing short-term extensions instead of doing the hard work of passing a new bill. Quarles warned against that approach, saying “In an increasingly competitive global environment for agriculture it is a terrible path to start down. And I think everybody in agriculture has to be pounding the tables saying folks need to get their houses in order. We need to get people here who can actually make a deal.”
