Three days after U.S. President Donald Trump removed the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Mexico responded by removing its 20 percent tariff on frozen potatoes from the U.S.
The tariff had resulted in a 26 percent decline of U.S. potato exports to Mexico during the first three quarters of the July 2018 – June 2019 marketing year, according to numbers from Potatoes USA. Mexico is the U.S. potato industry’s third largest fry export market.
Potato industry leaders are hopeful that the resolution of this trade issue will lead to the passage of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
