A P.E.I. couple celebrated their wedding day in true Island style — with an eight-foot-tall potato named Tate the Tater as their special guest.
Tate the Tater, the industry mascot for the P.E.I. Potato Board, has been at a lot of events, but this was his first wedding.
He was invited by bride, Amy Ramsay, 27, and groom, Matthew Ramsay, 27, who is a potato farmer. They live in Cascumpec, P.E.I. and were married on Aug. 27 in western P.E.I.
Matthew Ramsay said his wife Amy thought it would be good entertainment for the kids.
‘I work on a potato farm … so I thought it would just be fitting if Tate made an appearance.’ — Matthew Ramsay, groom
“It would take the lull out of the reception when people are trying to eat and there wasn’t any speeches going on, she thought it’d be a great idea.”
The couple got married at the Elite Seed Potato Farm owned by the P.E.I. Potato Board. Tate was a surprise to wedding guests and a big hit with both kids and adults. Many people took pictures with the mascot.
Tate the Tater a hit with wedding guests
“I work on a potato farm and of course the location of the wedding was on Fox Island so I thought it would just be fitting if Tate made an appearance,” said Matthew Ramsay.
Kendra Mills, marketing director of the P.E.I. Potato Board, thought the wedding pictures with Tate were “awesome.”
“I was hoping that they were going to put him in his first tux … he was a hit. People love things like that. It’s a lot of fun,” said Mills.
